A defensive system that protects a subject within a fully-enclosed spherical energy field.
It was first created to replace the pinpoint-barrier system of the SDF-1. The defense system necessitated an almost complete energy drain on the SDF-1's power systems, making it susceptible to overload. During a Zentraedi attack over the Ontario Quadrant, an overload of the barrier system caused an explosion, destroying the Zentraedi battlecruisers along with the city below. This side-effect of the barrier was used to great advantage in a decisive battle which destroyed Dolza's fortress and most of the Zentraedi Armada.
Decades later, the Invid were found to be using a similar system to defend their hives from attack by the Robotech Expedition's Earth Reclamation Force.

A variation on the Daedalus Maneuver is used with the Omni-Directional Barrier System to destroy Dolza's fortress
