Resistance fighters must be sneaky. It is the backbone of the "freedom fighter" code. An unhappy truck driver makes this discovery when he stops to assist Rook and Annie. The two girls hijack the truck and head back to replenish their fuel supplies and strike the Invid at the same time.

In his guise as Yellow Dancer, Lancer stages a rock concert to serve as a diversion while the others break in to one of the largest protoculture storage units in the area. Rand is sure their strategy will go off without a problem. "When folks find out Yellow's coming to town, people go berserk."

Rand is right. As Yellow, Lancer is greeted by a town official who assures the singer: "To make sure your performance runs smoothly, I'm obtaining the cooperation of the president's personal police department."

Those words are music to Lancer's ears. They want to tie up the entire security department – a department created to guard the immense protoculture storage area – while the group completes the raid.

As the concert begins, Scott, Rand, and Rook breach the unit using a map provided by Lancer. The system is complicated. They encounter a few heart-stopping difficulties getting the material they need. Once security discovers the raid, the freedom fighters create a double-diversion using the hijacked truck. While police chase the vehicle, the stolen protoculture is carried away by helium-filled balloons released at the end of the concert.

When the team regroups, they waste no time in celebrating even though their first mission has been a fantastic success. They take off immediately, seeking cover with the Invid and their allies pursuit.
