I just bought the Space Battleship Yamato: The Classic Collection manga book put out bu Seven Seas Entertainment.

This is a translated version of the original Space Battleship Yamato manga written and illustrated by Leiji Matsumoto.

It’s not quite what i had expected.

The story is a truncated version of the original anime, with notable differences. Among then being Susumu Kodai’s older brother Memoru taking on the identity of Captian Harlock.

Harlock’s ship, the Deathshadow (not named, and with a black hull) makes a couple of appearances.

It also seems to end with the beginning of the Comet Empire storyline.

All in all I found it an interesting read.

Thanks for the head up.

Quick question ... does the Space Battleship Yamato: The Classic Collection manga book directly tie into the Captain Harlock: The Classic Collection?

I looked it up on Amazon, but the description doesn’t say one way or another.

It’s somewhat complicated, but not really.

Captain Harlock is probably Matsumoto’s most iconic character. He’s existed in one form or another since the 1960s.

The original Harlock manga takes place around a millennium after Space Battleship Yamato.

Then there the anime movie My Youth in Arcadia, which takes place around a century after Yamato. That leads directly into the other Harlock manga, Endless Orbit (or Endless Road) SSX.
That sets up Harlock’s appearance in Galaxy Express 999 (both the manga and anime).

Thanks,

I grew up watching Yamato, Captain Harlock, and Galaxay Express, but its been many years and I forgot the finer details of each series.

I need to up my anime collection and get some of the classics.
