As we are working on the art for the game I will try to make sure to post art as it is available for viewing.

Additionally I would like to really welcome y’all to ask anything you want here and I will do everything I can to share as much information as possible.
I will also be updating information on the Board Game Geek site:  https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/235653/robotech-force-arms

Additional question:  As we are working on the overall design and concept for the deckbuilder we would love to see if anyone would like to suggest titles for it.
The deckbuilder plan is to start with Macross and then build SC and NG expansions.

Thanks
Dave

I have had several questions about what and why and so here is an open note for all the Robotech fans:

-+-+-+-

Solar Flare Games was very happy to have it announced Friday, September 22 that we have signed an agreement with Harmony Gold USA to create board games in the ROBOTECH universe.
That one sentence might not seem like huge news to some people but to me this is one of the most exciting projects I have ever begun. Who am I? I am Dave Killingsworth, the owner of SolarFlare Games and someone who gets to live out a dream that I have had for over 30 years.

Now, I have had many dreams but this one is especially cool and exciting to me. Back in 1986 I was introduced to Anime for the very first time, in the form of the very first episode of ROBOTECH: The Macross Saga. I was not looking for anime, just something to watch after school.

From the opening credits of the series which felt very much like watching some of the carrier scenes from Top Gun to the alien vs. human dog fights, I was hooked. Like a kid with a brand-new toy I had found something new, wonderful, and amazing.

I spent the next several weeks watching an episode a day until I had seen human unity, war, peace, loss, victory, and love all in 36 episodes of a very cool cartoon. The characters were interesting; the story was very dynamic and just so much fun to watch.

I have lost track of how many times I have watched the series, but it never has lost that original appeal. No matter how old I have gotten the show and those “people” of the Robotech Defense Force (RDF) have always been a touchstone point in my life that is very vivid and clear. The lessons offered up were very wonderful; good will eventually win, winning comes at a cost and love isn’t always found where you might expect, but be ready to embrace it when it finds you.

I know some of this may sound a little cheesy but, to a degree, isn’t all nostalgia and connections back to those simpler days? This has become very fresh to me because 31 years after that touchstone, I suddenly find myself surrounded by my old friends from the RDF but for a very new and exciting reason.

I have been making board/card games since 2013 and this year I had a great idea for a card game that I wanted to make. It was a two-player game, based on combat and in space. While playtesting it with some friends one of them said, “Do you know what would make this game even better, a really great theme.” He was right and I started to think about what would be a fun way to “dress” the game and then it clicked, ROBOTECH!

I thought back to all of those episodes and hours spent watching the show. I knew that I had to reach out to Harmony Gold and see if there was any way I could secure the right to turn our nameless factions into a struggle between the RDF and the Zentraedi.

I emailed them that night and here we are, I am getting to interact and play with my old friends from ROBOTECH. It was a very exhilarating and surreal moment when Harmony Gold agreed to let me make games with their beloved intellectual property. I find myself in an amazing place where I get to help build and expand the universe into the world of board and card games.

It brings me a great deal of joy that I get to bring ROBOTECH: Force of Arms to game stores in the first half of 2018 and help introduce a whole new generation to my old friends. I take this privilege very seriously and hope that people love this game (and the ones coming after) and that it becomes a gateway for families to connect, have fun, and get to know my comrades from over thirty years ago.

A great responsibility and an extraordinary joy. I am a proud member of the RDF and hope many of you come join me. Suit up, get in your veritech and help me defend the Earth.”

Sounds like it has the right person at the helm.  I look forward to giving it a try next year.

Robotech: Danger Zone or Robotech: Metal Fire sound like they fit the bill for an expansion for The Masters War (if we’re going with names based on Tv episodes). I also think that the game should have multiple strategies for winning that don’t involve directly destroying your opponent such as winning a subversion victory (for example). I’d also say that there should be a way to have more than 2 players involved in the game, especially since its straight up said that The Invid Invasion saw fighting on Earth between the 3 factions: UEF, Tiolians and the Invid.

Since the announcement of this project we have been getting a lot of good feedback and support.  Thank you.
Also our facebook page has been getting more and more followers (just broke 1500)  http://www.facebook.com/solarflaresgames
Additionally our twitter http://www.twitter.com/bravefrontier has passed 1600 so with all that happy good news - I thought I would share 2 cards from the new game.

These are two forms of the SDF-1 and of course we did the SDF-1 first.
See what you think.

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick update. Dave sent me the art for most of the cards last night and the game looks fantastic. Anyone who is going to be at BGG.con should come see us for a play test. If any of you happen to work at the Irving/Las Colinas campus of Microsoft, I will be running some play tests/preview there in December.

So we had a very successful time playing the game at BGG con this past week. For those of you interested, here is the description I had come up with by the end of the convention:
Robotech: Force of Arms is a Tactical Game of fleet movement and area control. You will assume command of either the RDF or Zentradi fleet. On your turn, you will move on of your capital ships, either into the open spot on the board or switching its location with another ship. Then you will look at your fighters who have either a defense or attack value and play 2 of them face down on your sides of the board, with their attack or defensive influence extending across the whole of the adjacent row or column. Attack fighters are used to destroy your opponent’s ships and do not affect yours. Defensive fighters defend your ships and have no effect on your opponent.  Some of the fighters provide bonus tokens if played face up. After all the cards have been played, you and your opponent will alternate playing your tokens adding attack or defense to your ships. Then we will enter the phase we call the hero and command phase. The person who had been going second will become the first player. Then you and your opponent will alternate playing cards and executing their effect from your hero and command cards, until you have both played 1 hero and 2 commands. You will then determine what ships you have saved (your defensive strength vs your opponent’s attack) or destroyed (your attack strength vs your opponent’s defense). Tied ships are not scored. Add up the vp of all the ships you have saved/destroyed. Player with the highest total wins.

Good Luck, commanders!

I just wanted to share that after four days of playing Robotech: Force of Arms at the BGG Con the respect, love and interest was nearly overwhelming.  Watching to many people square off head to head as RDF vs the Zentraedi and just have a great time and enjoying the hard lean into the theme was an awesome experience.  The game ended up on the GeekBuzz board as the 3rd most popular game at the convention and they could only play it at our table.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com

We are still tracking to get this into stores in late Q2 2018.  The art is coming along - yes all of it is and will be original.  We are going for a nice realistic and battle worn look.

I appreciate all the support and excitement and I am so glad I get to work on this and share it with you.

Here is a little extra info to show you how we tried to lean into the theme and really make people feel like they were in the series.

Hero Card:  Henry Gloval
If you play this card - you swap the carrier looking card of the SDF-1 for the Robot Mode SDF-1 on the board and then perform the Daedalus Maneuver.  Allowing you to place 3 +1 attack tokens on an adjacent Zentraedi ship.

The Max (RDF Hero) and Miriya (Zentraedi Hero)
They have the exact same power in the game (fighter based) because you know… max and miriya.

The plan for this game will be $20.00 retail (subject to change) but is great for any level gamer and the complexity is driven by the players.
We nearly have the expansion done as well.  It will be small and less than 10$ but is called…. Robotech: Force of Arms - Grand Cannon Expansion   - it adds new vectors for victory and thus makes the game even more dynamic.

We are working with HG to see if we can get it available soon for pre-order but no promises.

Any questions please just ask

Hi Capstern, you may want to correct that link.  You have a comma instead of a period.
