Scott turns up the angst on episode 70 of Robotech, Enter Marlene. Diagrams are complicated for Annie, Rick Hunter takes “wolf squadron” too literally, and we go really deep into an alternate take on this episode.

Two episodes to post here! We get into really deep discussions about Lancer and then EVEN DEEPER discussions about the continuity references in the Titan Comics series.

Our newest episode covers issue #22 of the #Robotech comic! We break down all the deep cut references, sing the praises of Dana, and can’t get over Max’s face in ‘Curtain Call’. We also discuss the Harmony Gold/Tatsunoko renewal and Robotech: Remix!

Wow, I have been neglecting this thread for too long! BUT NOW I CORRECT THAT. We’ve had a bunch of great episodes as of late but our most recent one features an interview with Simon Furman!

I just joined these boards specifically to comment in this thread about the podcast, which I found through Player.fm.

Although some of the in-jokes and tangential comedy have started to get on my nerves in a couple of episodes, I’ve overall found the discussions of each episode to be insightful and thought-provoking and a great compliment to what could in all honesty be considered a ‘virgin’ watchthrough of the series (I know I watched it as a child, but don’t actually much about it).

Whoa hey, nice to know all my plugging of this thread on the show is paying off! Thanks for checking the show and glad you find it insightful. Making this friendly to people who aren’t as familar with Robotech is exactly what I wanted to do so hey, it’s working!

Sorry the in-jokes aren’t doing it for you but that’s how Nick and I roll. We try not to take ourselves too seriously. Plus, when the people from Harmony Gold and even Simon Furman are making Pipey jokes? We’re doing something right!

And to keep this thread updated, here’s our newest interview with Brenden Fletcher! He gives a fantastic preview for Robotech: Remix so you gotta listen to this before Remix drops!

For the most part, the in-jokes have been fun; they just came across to me as being inappropriate in a couple of episodes (specifically those covering Phantasm/Farewell, Big Brother and Bursting Point/Paradise Lost).

Out of curiosity, when are you guys going to resume covering Season 3 (New Generation)?

Fair enough, different strokes for different folks!

Once we do our review of Remix #1 (which will come out the day after the comic is released) we’ll have our next New Gen episode!

I know you guys recorded this a while ago, but as a new listener to the podcast, I wanted to respond to your invitation for people to share their own thoughts and opinions on Robotech and some of the topics you guys have covered in your discussions.

To start, I wanted to address the “squick factor” present in your reaction to the Minmei/Kyle love plot.

In most modern cultures, there is both a legal and societal taboo against romantic relationships between relatives, but that’s exactly what said taboo is: modern.

In earlier centuries, it was not only acceptable for relatives to form romantic relationships, but also common.

It should also be pointed out that, at the time SDF Macross was released, Japan had only recently made it illegal for cousins closer than a third degree of separation to marry, and so it strikes me as likely that the show was very intentional in describing and depicting them as romantically linked cousins.

I next wanted to answer the question of whether or not I like Minmei, and the answer is “Yes”. She is very believable and relatable as a teenager who got thrust into the spotlight and let fame go to her head while also not really changing who she was as a person on a fundamental level.

The next thing I wanted to do is ask a question: is/was the mispronunciation of Lisa’s fiance’s last name an intentional “bit”?

I get what you’re saying about the Minmei/Kyle plot but it still boggles the mind why this wasn’t changed for Robotech. I know Carl Macek was all about keeping the original Japanese script intact for the most part but culturally it still feels strange to leave it in. It still “squicks” me out, personally. The show wasn’t that long ago and it still feels strange for EVERYONE on the ship to treat it as if it’s a fairly normal thing.

On the Karl Riber thing, I just rechecked episode 7 where he’s first mentioned and the narrator refers to him as Karl RE-ber but I’m fairly certain Lisa pronounces it the way we do. I’ll take Lisa over the narrator anytime and Nick agrees.

Only when you look at the situation through a modern cultural and societal lens based on our worldview. The world of Robotech may resemble our world, but it’s not, and so we shouldn’t expect the people who inhabit it to share our worldview.

I don’t recall Lisa saying Karl’s last name in dialogue, only his first name, and it hasn’t been that long since I watched Bye Bye Mars or the other episodes where she talks or thinks about him.

So what you’re saying is, in the Robotech world a man can marry his pipe and no one would question it? After all, THE SHOW NEVER STATES ANYTHING TO CONTRARY.

I like where your head is at.

Whoa, it’s been too long since I updated this thread! We’d had a lot of content since we last updated, with discussions of all the issues of Remix that have come out and a good chunk of New Gen!

Here comes out review of ‘Frostbite.’ Scott has a lot of trouble zipping up a dress and we discuss the implications of what the team finds in the abandoned city.
